Design
The HP EliteBook 16 865 G9 has the same case as the ZBook Firefly 16 G9. Its design is less angular compared to that of the older EliteBook 850 G8. The silver aluminum case appears to be of high quality. Both the display cover and the base unit are very stable. The laptop opens to almost 180 degrees; the hinges cannot prevent minimal teetering. The narrow bezels give the device a very modern appearance. The new 16-inch device is a little thicker than the old 15-inch EliteBook 850 G8, but not any wider. The Lenovo ThinkPad T16 G1, which also has a 16-inch screen, is slightly bigger and a little thicker too. Overall, the new EliteBook 865 G9 is very portable. The 110-watt power supply weighs 451 grams, and the EliteBook itself weighs approximately 1.9 kg.
Processor
The HP EliteBook 16 865 G9 is equipped with the AMD Ryzen 5 6600U is a processor for thin and light laptops based of the Rembrandt generation. The Ryzen packs six of the eight cores based on the Zen 3+ microarchitecture. They are clocked at 2.9 (guaranteed base clock) to 4.5 GHz (Turbo) and support SMT / Hyperthreading (12 threads). The chip is manufactured on the modern 6 nm process at TSMC. Compared to the similar R5 6600H, the 6600U offers a lower base clock speed and a lower TDP. In the 6000 series, AMD finally switched to the current RDNA 2 graphics architecture for the iGPU. The 6600U only offers the small Radeon 660M with 6 of the 12 CUs enabled and 1.9 GHz max. clock rate.
Display
Our test unit is equipped with the optional Sure View panel, which features an integrated privacy filter. Its general characteristics (1920 x 1200 pixels, a matte surface and up to 1000 cd/m² brightness) are promising, but there is much more to consider. The integrated privacy filter can be activated at the touch of a button, but even with it turned off, viewing angles are very limited – the sweet spot right in front of the display where image quality is not reduced is very narrow. Even small movements can lead to noticeably lower contrast and brightness.
Keyboard
The backlit keyboard with a dedicated number pad made a very good impression on us. The keystroke is very firm, so opinions may vary depending on personal preference, but overall, this is one of the best keyboards available for mobile devices. It is better than the more expensive ZBook Studio 16 G9 and can even be compared to Lenovo’s ThinkPads, although their quality has dropped over the last few years. Overall we would prefer the EliteBook’s splashproof input device to that of the current ThinkPad T16. Only the integrated power button and the small vertical arrow keys take a bit of getting used to.
