ASUS TUF A15 FX506L

The chassis of ASUS TUF A15 FX506L is a combination of the older FX505 and newer TUF DASH FX516. More specifically, it incorporates the metal-backed outer lid of the FX516 onto the base design features of the FX505. Other aspects have been updated as well including the touchpad and certain colors along the rear. The end result is a “tougher” and more visually appealing gaming laptop especially when the lid is closed. A notable benefit of the textured in palm rests in ASUS TUF FX506L is their ability to detract fingerprint buildup. The smoother keyboard keys and touchpad, however, aren’t as lucky.

Display

The display of ASUS TUF A15 FX506L diagonal 15.6″ (39.62 cm), and the resolution 1920 х 1080 pixels. The screen ratio is 16:9, and we are looking at a pixel density of – 142 PPI, and a pitch of 0.18 х 0.18 mm. The screen turns into Retina when viewed at a distance equal to or greater than 60cm (24″) (from this distance one’s eye stops differentiating the separate pixels, and it is normal for looking at a laptop).

Performance

The ASUS TUF A15 FX506L is equipped with Intel Core i5-10300H is a fast processor for laptops with four cores based on the Comet Lake-H series. The processor clocks at between 2.5 and 4.5 GHz (up to 4.2 with 4 cores) and can execute up to eight threads simultaneously thanks to Hyper-Threading. According to Intel, the CPU is manufactured in a 14nm (14nm++) process. Compared to the predecessor, the Core i5-9300H from 2019, the 10300H is clocked slightly higher (+100 MHz Base, +400 MHz Boost) and supports faster DDR4-2933 RAM.

Keyboard

The typing experience on TUF A15 FX506L remains mostly the same. Feedback from the main QWERTY keys is still satisfactory with a moderately loud clatter.

Ports

On the left side of the TUF A15 FX506L, you will find the charging plug, an RJ-45 connector, an HDMI 2.0b connector, two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, a USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) port, and an audio jack. And on the right, there is only one USB Type-A 2.0 port, which would be best used as an external mouse or keyboard connector.

Battery

The ASUS TUF A15 FX506L is equipped with a 48Wh battery pack. It was able to deliver 5 hours of web browsing, 4 hours and 43 minutes of video playback, and above an hour of gaming.

Verdict

ASUS TUF A15 FX506L in the configuration we tested has an IPS panel with a Full HD resolution, comfortable viewing angles, good contrast ratio, and a non-flickering backlight. Unfortunately, the color coverage is rather narrow, with 57% of the sRGB gamut. Also, the refresh rate is paired with slow pixel response times, which results in ghosting in fast-paced games.
