MSI Katana GF66 11UC Gaming laptop

MSI Katana GF66 11UC Gaming laptop Price in Pakistan

Design

Here, we see a pretty familiar design choice. It resembles a big black box with the MSI logo now being uncolored and embossed into the lid. Interestingly, the laptop is thicker (24.9mm) and heavier (2.25 kg) than its predecessor. Moreover, it is now entirely made out of plastic. If we have to be honest, the base feels like metal, as it is sturdy, and shows almost no deck flex. However, the lid bends like cheese.

Processor

The MSI Katana GF66 11UC  is equipped with the Intel Core i5-11400H is a high-end hexa-core SoC for gaming laptops and mobile workstations. It is based on the Tiger Lake H45 generation and was announced in mid 2021. It integrates six Willow Cove processor cores (12 threads thanks to Hyper-Threading). The base clock speed depends on the TDP setting and at 45 Watt is at 2.7 GHz. The single core boost speed can reach up to 4.5 GHz, all cores can reach up to 4.1 GHz. The CPU geatures 12 MB L3 cache and supports DDR4-3200 memory. Thanks to the new Tiger Lake architecture, the i5-11400H should be faster than the old Intel Core i7-10850H (Comet Lake-H, 6 cores, 2.7 – 5.1 GHz, 12 MB L3) in single and multi threaded workloads and similar to the Ryzen 5 5600H (Zen 3, 6 cores, 3.3 – 4.2 GHz, 16 MB L3). Therefore, the i5 is well suited for even very demanding tasks.

Performance

The MSI Katana GF66 11UC gaming laptops are available in a wide variety of configurations. Either the Intel Core i5-12500H or the i7-12700H are available, as well as either 8 or 16 GB of DDR4-3200 working memory. MSI also offers various configurations of graphics chips starting from the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 up to the RTX 3070 Ti. In the preinstalled operating system, you also have the choice between FreeDos or Windows 11 Home. Our test unit offers a powerful configuration with the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, Intel Core i7-12700H, and 16 GB of RAM. With this, the laptop is clearly targeted towards gaming. Thanks to the powerful graphics card, even graphically demanding games can be played at high frame rates.

Display

MSI Katana GF66 has a 144Hz IPS panel, model number AUO B156HAN08.4 (AUOAF90). Its diagonal is 15.6″ (39.62 cm), and the resolution 1920 х 1080 pixels. The screen ratio is 16:9, and we are looking at a pixel density of – 142 ppi, and a pitch of 0.18 х 0.18 mm. The screen turns into Retina when viewed at distance equal to or greater than 60cm (24″) (from this distance one’s eye stops differentiating the separate pixels, and it is normal for looking at a laptop).

Ports

The left side of this device houses the power plug, a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, and a USB Type-A 2.0 port. Then, if you look to the right, you will see an RJ-45 connector, an HDMI connector, a USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, and an audio jack.

Verdict

NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 1060 is still the most popular graphics card according to Steam. Finally, in the face of the RTX 3050, we believe we will see a change in the status quo. Especially in the laptop world. Since it will come in laptops such as the MSI Katana GF66, it’s going to be an extremely affordable solution. In this review, we found that the RTX 3050 has no problems handling pretty much any game at 1080p. Even at high graphics settings. On the other hand, the Katana GF66 might not be the best example. Despite its metric ton of heat pipes, it struggles to maintain low enough internal temperatures. This, respectively, results in a lot of heat being transferred to the outside, which significantly warms up the keyboard.
