Design

The Design of HP Pavilion 14 Ryzen 5 5500U gives an overall stable impression. The back of the display and the frame around the keyboard are made of aluminum. The lid has a white finish, which, combined with the matte surface structure, differentiates it from other notebooks. The surfaces are anodized and hardly show any signs of aging. While the bottom cover is made from plastic, it looks very similar to the other parts of the case and will only be recognized as such at closer inspection.

Processor

The HP Pavilion 14 Ryzen 5 is equipped with the AMD Ryzen 5 5500U is a hexa-core APU of the Lucienne product family designed for leaner laptops. Its six CPU cores are based on the Zen 2 microarchitecture. The cores run at 2.1 (clock speed) to 4 GHz (Boost) and support SMT for a total of 12 threads. The chip is manufactured on the modern 7 nm TSMC process. The costlier Ryzen 5 5600U is based on newer Zen 3 architecture and also has higher clock speeds. Compared to the older Ryzen 5 4500U (Renoir), Ryzen 5 5500U has SMT support but the specs are otherwise very similar between the two.

Display

The 14-inch IPS panel is good. It features the stable viewing angles we have come to expect from an IPS display and is easy to read even outdoors thanks to its good brightness. Despite brightness levels being slightly limited when running on battery, the 2500 nits still ensure that text can be read easily.

Keyboard

The standard-size chicklet keyboard is fast and precise. Users who type a lot should be very pleased with this keyboard. Both the counterpressure and the slightly audible click when the key is pressed leave a high-quality impression. Travel is on the short side as expected, but satisfactory nonetheless. Because the foundation is very stable even under strong pressure, the keyboard gives a good overall impression.

Touchpad

There is hardly anything to criticize about the touchpad: It responds precisely and can be used just as accurately with one or four fingers, which is also due to the large surface. Only pressing the mouse keys feels a bit spongy. This does not apply to left-clicking via the normal touch-sensitive surface.

Speakers

The speakers are positioned below the wrist rest and point downward. They can reach their full potential when the device is positioned on a hard table, which acts as a reflective surface. The principle is comparable with a modern TV set and is implemented well in the Pavilion 14. This was to be expected, as one would hope that Bang & Olufsen would only lend its name to a device with speakers that are at least above average. Music and films sound nicely balanced.
