Design

Black plastic and some black-painted metal are used for the case of the HP Omen. The Omen logo on the display lid is the only eye-catching spot of color. Otherwise, the laptop’s design has been kept simple. Straight lines with few decorations make up the exterior of the gaming notebook. Nothing has changed in the design since last year. Even the otherwise typical large openings for fans are inconspicuous here. HP manages to make the laptop look much less larger than it is thanks to Swiss edges and other optical tricks. In return, it almost seems to hover above the surface.

Processor

The HP OMEN 17 CK1006TX is equipped with the Intel Core i7-12800HX is a high-end mobile CPU for laptops based on the Alder Lake architecture. It was announced in mid 2022 and offers 8 performance cores (P-cores, Golden Cove architecture) and 8 efficient cores (E-cores, Gracemont architecture). The P-cores support Hyper-Threading leading to 24 supported threads when combined with the E-cores. The clock rate ranges from 2.0 to 4.8 GHz on the performance cluster and 1.5 to 3.4 GHz on the efficiency cluster. The performance of the E-cores should be similar to old Skylake cores (compare with the Core i7-6920HQ). All cores can use up to 25 MB L3 cache. The CPU offers an open multiplicator and therefore the possibility to overclock the CPU cores. Compared to the similar i7-12850HX, the 12800HX does not offer vPro or ECC memory support.

Keyboard

While a 17-inch laptop has room for a full keyboard, HP has omitted the Numpad here to make more room for the arrow keys and some macro keys (P1 to P6) and to give the key blocks good spacing. The RGB-illuminated keyboard is very haptically pleasing thanks to a clear key travel of over one millimeter and crisp feedback. For Europeans, who are used to the ISO layout, the ANSI layout of the keyboard might be quite unusual. On the other hand, gamers who mainly use mechanical keyboards should quickly feel at home here.

Touchpad

The clickpad responds to every input with a rich clicking sound. It is precise and responsive. The size and position of the clickpad are also pleasing.
